After several years of creating Christmas décor and designs for events and interior designers, I started this Christmas blog to create all of the wilder holiday designs I dream of.
Sometimes a lot of planning goes into my Christmas trees. I percolate on palettes and design and maybe even on how to craft an ornament. I mean, it may be safe to say I overthink some things, but I love designing Christmas trees. I put my whole heart in it. But for this taper candle tree, I was trying to approach my design in a different way.
I buy a lot of things for Christmas. Our attic should have shelves so that I can just go up there and shop it. So at the end of last year, I challenged myself to decorate a Christmas tree using only items I already owned.
It seemed like using a collection would be the best route because I didn’t want it to look messy or hodge-podge. Of all of the collections of things I have, I landed on my small collection of brass candlesticks. I have about 20 of these shiny beauties, gathered from estate sales and flea markets. They were the perfect decor for a stunning Christmas tree.
Making A Taper Candle Christmas Tree
If you love how this turned out (I do), let me tell you that zip-ties are going to be your best friend. Brass candlesticks are freaking heavy and definitely weren’t made to balance on a branch. You need to zip-tie the heck out of them just to keep them close to upright.
Because of the weight and balance factor, I ended up going minimalistic with my decor. Since I was using so few brass candlesticks, I opted for a selection of super bright taper candles instead of the white ones I’d planned to use.
Honestly, sometimes it’s these accidental pivots that make for the best Christmas trees. The bright colors made the brass candlesticks feel less fussy. They add some life and fun to the tree. The white candles would have been lost in the flocked branches, but these brightly colored tapers make for a colorful moment.
Using What You Have At Christmas
This was a good challenge for me. I shop way more than anyone would guess for Christmas decor and ornaments, always focused on what’s next. Taking a moment to pause and adapt to items I already had and loved was a good reminder. Creativity is always better than more.
Making use of what I had made me think more about how to execute the design instead of how to shop for it. And I love how this little taper candle Christmas tree turned out. I’m going to give myself the same challenge this year and see what magic emerges. If you end up doing the same, please share your tree design!
