What I love about Christmas decorating is that the commitment level to any one theme or style is low. I can make every tree or every room in my house have a different theme, and then next year, I can change them all again! Because of that, I tend to span the spectrum of being a minimalist or maximalist. I have some rooms that feel like an explosion of sparkly Christmas joy and others that feel like a quiet Christmas daydream. This minimalist Christmas tree definitely lends itself to the latter.
Winter is the season of rest. Because of that intrinsic need in all of us to seek out the quiet of the season, taking a minimalist approach to your holiday decorating is a great idea.
Minimalism can often feel “lesser” than maximalism. But, it shouldn’t feel like a negative thing! Having less lets your eyes rest. Displaying less lets what you do share shine. Decking the halls with less can lead to peaceful contemplation.
Minimalist Christmas decor looks a lot different than its maximalist counterpart. You can choose moments or vignettes to your advantage. You can share your holiday joy with simple or sparkly decor, but by letting it stand on its own instead of en masse. If you’re choosing to go the minimal route to your holiday decorating this year, embrace it! You’re going to make some beautiful Christmas magic.
I wanted this tree to be easy. Not just because I’m going for minimal and chic, but because I have a lot happening this time of year. I needed a tree that could look absolutely enchanting and intentional, but not require a lot of effort.
Part of that plan, meant using a tree base I already owned. This matte black metal stand is, I think, from Target in 2022. I love it because it’s not reflective, and it’s stylish without being attention-grabbing. If you love to change up your holiday tree themes, I highly recommend grabbing something as multi-purposeful as this tree base.
This is my newest tree, so I am all about it right now. It’s a sparse, alpine style tree with several different types of branches which adds to its realistic look. Since I was going for minimalism, having a tree that was itself minimal is perfect.
No topper for this tree. I wanted less. I wanted your eye to go directly to what IS on the tree and not have to bounce around between things. Also, I have a personal opinion that toppers are overdone currently. The tops of Christmas trees (real or artificial) are beautiful in their natural state. Adding a massive amount of stuff up there changes the entire silhouette of a tree.
Now, what is on this minimalist Christmas tree is lights. Two strands of star shaped lights to be exact. That’s it. I naturally tend toward enough lights to make a tree visible from space, but I fought my instinct this time. And I’m glad I did! These two simple strands of lights look romantic and whimsical.
The great part of minimalist Christmas decorating is that it’s going to fit in any room and with any style you already love. It won’t compete or clash. It’s going to simply add a bit of cheer and peace to your already loved space. At least, that’s what this tree does for me.
I’ll be the first person to say that I love a crazy, all out, maximalist Christmas. I love bouncing from one holiday party to the next. I love spending time with everyone I know. I love it all!
However, as I get older, I am finding moments where I scoop things off my full plate with both hands. I want some quiet days with my husband and son where we play a board game and take afternoon naps. I want to have a peaceful hour on a winter morning with a cup of hot chocolate and time to journal. My days of constantly go-go-going might be gone-gone-gone.
So if you’re reading this and the thought of your usual Christmas decorating feels daunting, I’m here for you. Take it easy this year. Add one strand of lights around a window or your bed frame. Get one tree down and don’t put a thing on it. Do what you need to do so that you can keep the spirit of Christmas in your heart without being burdened by it. We all have those years.
Here’s a calm and bright Christmas cheer to the beauty of minimalism. May your heart be light because you’ve celebrated with less. And, I hope this minimalist Christmas tree inspires you and gives you a moment of peace.
