After several years of creating Christmas décor and designs for events and interior designers, I started this Christmas blog to create all of the wilder holiday designs I dream of.
Entering a Scandinavian Kata Tipi is nothing short of magical. You walk inside to find that the sun turns the light inside the tipi into glowing amber. And leaning your head back, the top of the tipi seems to reach an impossible height. The walls block the wind, and the small fire is enough to keep the chill out but still allow you to enjoy the wintery nip in the air. A cozy, Scandinavian Christmas escape. So when the holiday stress gets to you, run to your tipi— your Christmas tipi to be exact.

The greatest part about this time of year is all the things to celebrate with the people you love. There’s a million delightful ways to theme your holiday party, most of which include long-held traditions and comforting color palettes of red and green. For our winter gathering, invites were sent to the women we work alongside and with whom we get to do this crazy life thing. We wanted to revel in our favorite cozy Christmas trimmings while doing something that made this party feel exciting and new. So, we fled the bustle of downtown Nashville to celebrate a magical year of new businesses and growing families in these beautiful Scandinavian Kata Tipis. Decked for December, the tipis were the perfect place for a relaxing winter gathering. All was calm and bright for a glorious evening with the gals.
SCANDINAVIAN INSPIRED DECOR
Half the fun of Christmas is decorating, so a few of us spent a day trimming the tipi. With Christmas carols playing in the background and hot chocolate to keep us warm, this day of decorating seemed almost like a second party in itself! Since the event was taking place in a Scandinavian tipi, our inspiration for the design was Jan Brett’s fantastically illustrated Christmas children’s books. Her Trouble With Trolls and The Wild Christmas Reindeer are beloved by all of us for their incredibly detailed pictures. We embraced her saturated crimson-and-emerald palette, and we filled every corner with details and features to re-create the winter wilds in the borders of her books. To do this, we kept the outdoors inside the tent by using only real flora in the decor. Walking into the tipis felt like entering a Scandinavian Christmas fairy tale.
While most of the trees in Nashville are starting to lose their leaves, Denise of Green Finch Floral Design led us in a foraging expedition in which we found almost all of the florals we hung and arranged. With a couple hearty pairs of pruning shears, we helped her collect pine, spruce, berries, and twigs. Some branches ended up around a higher brace in the tent and a ton were used to create our enchanting table garland.
We added bright red apples, simple white china, and gorgeous vintage gold and crystal glassware to the table. Our dinner felt opulent and indulgent without being stuffy. The guests could comfortably chat about their highlights from the past year. It was a captivating setting to celebrate a year well spent with friends.
CHRISTMAS PARTY IN A SCANDINAVIAN KATA TIPI
Klista and Gary of Two Monkeys Vintage and Kata Tipis of Nashville helped us raid their delightful warehouse for seating in deep green and red velvet. They also supplied the portable fireplace for our s’mores-making. After dinner we wrapped up in blankets to enjoy a glass of wine and our s’mores while we watched the sunset change the lighting inside the tipi. Vintage, candlelit glass globes hung on a large oak branch began twinkling as the sun went down. The effect was ethereal and made everyone feel like we were miles away from the hustle of Music City.
As the sun started to sink and the tipis glowed amber, if felt like living in a winter fairy tale. We toasted our friendship, shared funny stories, and snacked on s’mores — a lovely respite from the chaos of the season! A party made of Scandinavian Christmas magic.
