After several years of creating Christmas décor and designs for events and interior designers, I started this Christmas blog to create all of the wilder holiday designs I dream of.
This tree was a bit of last minute scramble in December when my original plans had to get postponed due to a lack of time! I was left with a mostly designed Christmas tree that had all of the little elements but was missing my big plans. That meant large bare spots and a tree that was way out of proportion. On a whim I put a host of small Christmas wreaths on a Christmas tree, and now I’ll never look back.
The Original Plan
My husband and I did a Christmas market tour through Germany, France, and the Netherlands for our honeymoon. It was amazing, and someday we are definitely going to do it again! One of our favorite spots was in the Black Forest region of Germany, and we bought a small cuckoo clock as a souvenir.
So my original plan for my husband’s office tree was to pay homage to our honeymoon with a Black Forest cuckoo clock tree. I was going very woodland themed with a flocked tree and green and snowy picks and sprays. I also added glass pinecones, green baubles, and hand-turned wooden ornaments. The final small touch was sticks my toddler and I gathered from the yard tucked in randomly to add some organic lines.
All that was left was for me to make about 8 six by ten inch faux cuckoo clocks. I’d already sketched them out and had written out a plan to make them, when the seasonal chaos hit. All of a sudden we had half a dozen parties to go to, daycare themed days and parties to help with, the end of the year rush with my job, and so on. Those cuckoo clocks were definitely not going to get finished.
How It Came To Putting Wreaths on a Christmas Tree
I could not leave that tree not quite done. It would have bothered me relentlessly. So, I made a plan to find something that did not need to be crafted and was less than $30 to finish that Christmas tree design. I already had a very woodland aesthetic, so it also needed to make sense with that.
My husband’s office is painted black, so I almost went with a selection of large black paper stars. I stand by the fact that this would work and look great. But, I put off ordering them for a day and when I tried to the next day, they were out of stock. Bummer.
So off I went to Hobby Lobby to find something that would work. At the end of an aisle, I saw a selection of small (10-12 inch) wreaths. But, can you put something leafy and green on a Christmas tree? Since I’d used a flock tree in his office, I thought there might be just enough contrast that putting wreaths on a Christmas tree could work.
I added a small sage green (since green was the only other color on the tree) to each wreath to highlight them a bit more. Then I gently tucked them around the tree. When I stepped back, I was sold! I love this idea, and I am definitely going to do it again!
What Kind of Wreaths On A Christmas Tree
Having seen how well the traditional style wreaths looked on a flocked tree, I think this can and should be done a lot more. Adding more ribbon, florals, or even dried fruit to these small wreaths would make them stand out.
You can add a wreath to any Christmas tree design. You can cover the wreaths with decor in the theme of the tree you’re decorating and add them to a tree already covered in ornaments. Or, you could decorate only the wreaths in the theme or aesthetic of your Christmas tree. Then, you’re getting to showcase the design you love on your tree in a completely different way.
Adding wreaths on a Christmas tree is a great way of keeping all of the Christmas decorations you love and treasure, and sharing them in a new and exciting way.
